"So much is already being done"It is often said from the Islamic associations and the communities. That’s true. Much is being done. I myself have been raising my voice against it for years and even organized a demo in Cologne with Tarek Mohamed in 2017. But that’s not enough. Islamists are just as active as right-wing ideologues. The fight against Islamists is, as it were, ongoing, like the fight against Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racism and so on. We all have to lead it over and over again. In the aftermath of Women’s Day, some Muslims behaved completely wrong. Apart from that, they were targeting liberal co-religionists. This shows that there is still a lot to be done.
We still have a long way to go. That became clear to me again last week after International Women’s Day. The Liberal-Islamic Bund (LIB e.V.) published a greeting on March 8th: Equal rights for men and women in the Muslim community is and will remain a central concern for which the LIB is fighting. In LIB congregations it has been customary since the association was founded almost ten years ago to hold mixed-gender prayers or to appoint a woman as a prayer leader. The LIB is the first Muslim association that has created such opportunities for believers in Germany. This was underlined on this women’s day greeting with a photo that shows women and men praying together like this.
Then there was encouragement and support for the LIB. At the same time, however, there were appalling insults and denigrations by women, but especially by men. The low point: Muslims, some of whom described themselves as religious, others as secular, let their disgusting sex fantasies run wild, proving that they are out of control when a woman is around – not even when they are in front of them God bows.
From injured masculinity to fear of loss of interpretation

It’s really terrifying what’s still happening with some of these even in 2019 "critic" comes up: hurt masculinity with some, fear of losing the interpretive sovereignty with others, ignorance with very many, miserable tone for almost everyone.
What does liberal mean?
Many people in Germany are currently thin-skinned. They react to social changes with fear, anger and hatred. It is no different among Muslims in Germany. Innovations are scandalized, taken out of context and ridiculed. Waves of outrage included. But why is that?
It is not the aim of liberal Muslims to press people into mixed-sex prayers. Liberal means meeting others in their views without devaluing them and respecting them – whether they are more secular or conservative than you are. Liberal Muslims only speak and oppose radical views.
No explicit ban on women in the Sunnah
We have people in our own ranks who also have stomach pains when an imam prays. But they still tolerate it: They listen to the interpretation of Islamic sources that make it clear that Muslim women do not have to go one step behind men, but are allowed to walk alongside them. They take note that there have always been learned and valued women in the Islamic world.
Even the former Egyptian Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa admitted a few years ago that there is no explicit ban on women leading mixed prayers in the Koran and the Sunna. Historical greats like al-Tabari formulated this centuries ago.
Nobody knows better than God
Why are so many Muslims concerned when other Muslims follow different interpretations of the Koran? Are they really interested in Islam? The Koran exhorts believers to use their minds and ponder the verses. "And in the end, nobody knows better than God alone."
This famous dictum in Islam applies from the beginning. But nowadays (apparently increasingly) Muslims presume this divine knowledge and claim that they know the sole truth as well as God. The spread of this narrow-mindedness is the real one "bid’a" in Islam – a reprehensible modification of religion by man. What about the divine requirement to quarrel with one another for good? Why is it no longer valid? Why this malice and polemics?
Everyone pretends that there is an Islam
In any case, it has to do with home education. Nowadays, many are taught that there is only one Islam – and that is of course the one you live at home or in your home mosque. It is like that among Turks, like that amongst Arabs, like that amongst Germans, like that amongst Indonesians, like that amongst Uyghurs and so on. And because they don’t all like to talk to each other about the differences, they live on in self-deception that there is only one Islam.
It certainly has to do with the diaspora situation. Most Muslims in Germany also have a migrant background and are confronted with the corresponding challenges between exclusion, adaptation and self-development. For some of them, Islam functions as an essential characteristic of their identity, because they are denied being German, for example, as well as clearly belonging to the country of origin of their parents or grandparents. Your identity "Muslim" It is therefore imperative to guard and protect.
Live and let live
Another reason for negative behavior towards anything that seems to contradict one’s own view of religion can be political goals. What does that mean now? Live and let live. That is the most important attitude of mind for everyone in a free, democratic, open, modern and diverse society. Religious communities are no exception. For this conviction we have to keep fighting and persuading us. Always and always. That is exactly why we founded the LIB back then.

Not only Germans can be racist. There are also foreigners who offer themselves to the right-wing populists. Unfortunately, nobody in Germany cares. That could take revenge, says columnist Lamya Kaddor.
Time to dispel an old cliché: Foreigners can also be racists. Most of the time, this accusation is raised against Germans in this country whose parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents etc. were all and without exception born somewhere between List on Sylt and Haldenwanger Eck in the Allgäu.
Not only is this unfair, it’s a common short-circuit. The commonality of an immigration history neither necessarily builds a bridge between people, nor does it forge an iron bond of solidarity.
"How dumb is that?"
To this day, many are puzzled about the fact that an association was recently founded by AfD members with a migration background. "Tell me, Lamya, did you hear that, how can they do that?", I’ve been asked more often in the past few days. "There is even an Iranian woman there. How dumb is that?"asked others. "April 1st already?" – "Am I such a backwoodsman because I just don’t understand how people with a migration background can give themselves up to such a party?"
The association is called "The New Germans". With only 20 members and fairly transparent intentions, such as giving the AfD a less right-wing image, it would not be worth mentioning if its existence did not bring a phenomenon to the fore that has not been discussed in Germany so far Thoughts.

Both on a scientific and a political level are topics like "German nationalism", Racism or Islamophobia among people with a migration background little or no present. Here lies a problem with a lot of social explosives. This is also indicated in my research project on Islamophobia in adolescence at the University of Duisburg-Essen, where we can currently only touch on these topics. Their importance will continue to grow in a country of immigration.
Research is urgently needed
Almost every fourth German (around 20 million people) has family roots abroad. Families who came from the former Soviet Union as (late) repatriates, for example, have long had the prejudice that they are particularly susceptible to nationalism, ethnic thinking or right-wing populism in a German sense. The initiator and founding chairman of the was apparently confirming "New Germans", Anton Friesen, Member of the Bundestag, was born in Kazakhstan to a Russian mother and a father of German origin.
There are numerous media reports about the political orientation of "Emigrants", but comparatively few scientifically founded facts, although it is one of the largest immigrant groups in Germany. Jannis Panagiotidis from the University of Osnabrück has only been a junior professor in Germany for a few years now researching people with a Russian-German migration background.
Ultimately, there are only major research efforts in Germany on migrants of Turkish origin. It does this with members of other groups who are called "do not know" categorized, it is correspondingly more difficult to clarify why some of them feel close to right-wing populist movements with German characteristics, although their generally ethnic thinking also excludes people like them.
On the verge of sedition
There are numerous more or less prominent Germans with a migration background who have been balancing on the verge of sedition for years and helping to run the business of discriminating against national, religious or ethnic minorities – always protecting the irrational assumption, "Foreigners" after all, could not be racists or Muslims not enemies of Islam. It is astonishing that no one has yet looked into this phenomenon in detail.
